Madison Scouts Volunteer Program

Est. Fall 2007

 Charter and Mission Statement

Welcome to the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. Over the past 70 years, more than 2,000 volunteers have made great sacrifices to assure the future of the organization. Throughout these years, volunteer activities have continuously evolved to meet the increasing needs of the Corps.

Nevertheless, the demands of today's drum corps activity continue to grow, leading to the need for a greater level of organization among volunteer activities. For this reason, we have created the “Madison Scouts Volunteer Program.”

The new Madison Scouts Volunteer Program provides support to the Corps through a structured organization of departments, competent leaders, and well thought-out processes.

The Madison Scouts Volunteer Program will stand as a permanent institution of the Corps with the infrastructure and strength to withstand formidable challenges from the drum corps activity.

Providing superior communication, organization, and accountability will lead to a successful, fulfilling, and fun volunteer experience for all. Whether you are committing to work an entire day or an entire summer, we are grateful for your sacrifice.

Be prepared for hard work, laughter, fellowship, and overwhelming pride in your achievements. We invite all individuals who share our desire for excellence in volunteering to fill out a Volunteer Interest Application and submit to the Madison Scouts Volunteer Program.

Thanks, Mike Anello

Volunteer Golden Rules

Do not over-commit.  Be reasonable when accepting volunteer responsibilities. Think it over before committing.

Be accountable.  People are depending on you to fulfill your volunteer commitment. However, if you feel you cannot fulfill your responsibilities, reach out and ask for help. You are not alone. We can help.

Be an ambassador.  Represent the organization, not the individual. Strengthen the Madison Scouts image through your positive actions.

Support and encourage others.  Camps, spring training, and especially tour can be exhausting for members and volunteers, alike. Offer a few words of encouragement when you can.

Be ready to be flexible. Oftentimes, very little will be in our control, yet we must leverage the little we have control over.  Ironically, this often leads to shifting priorities to take advantage of the things in our control.

Communicate.  Always ask questions. Repeat yourself. More communication is better than no communication.

Always be guided by the proper motivation.  Let the marching members and the tradition of the Madison Scouts motivate you. We are not here to exercise our power or politics.

We are human.  Misunderstandings and mistakes are inevitable, so be prepared to forgive or be forgiven.

Education requires patience. The Madison Scouts program develops and shapes young men's lives through a commitment to excellence. Be prepared for marching members and volunteers to make mistakes – it’s part of the learning experience.

Lead by example.  Live out these Golden Rules as a guide for others. Always choose positive actions over negative actions.
