Overview
The Sewing Department is responsible for the creation and
repair of basically anything made of fabric that belongs to
the corps. This
can be everything from instrument covers to uniforms. If it’s made of fabric, we’re going to be
responsible for keeping it in good repair.
Winter Camps
Between Auditions and Everydays
(May-June)
the Sewing Crew works with the show designers to create a
Color Guard uniform and a Corps uniform. Sometimes, the uniform is completely new;
other times, the Sewing Crew creates just a new piece on an existing
uniform. The Sewing Crew also creates the flags and Color
Guard uniforms. The extent of participation in making the
flags can range from creating flags from scratch, to
purchasing a completely finished flag from a company. These responsibilities change from
year to year, based on sponsorships and budget, etc. Members are measured for their uniforms and
accessories in February.
Everydays
(May –
June)
During Everydays, the Sewing Crew fits all members into
their uniforms.
Tour
Flexibility is a must for members of the Sewing Crew
on tour. There is no typical day on tour for the sewing crew. On
Monday, you may wash half the uniforms, and iron half the
pants, re-fit 20 members who have lost weight, repair damage
to an entire set of 40 flags, and re-sew the popped seams of
10 members. Then on Tuesday you’ll do it all again. But on Wednesday, you may find that you’re
repairing one flag and a mallet bag. We are there to fix, fit, and launder as needed.
Who
can be on the Sewing Crew?
During Winter Camps, everyone can be on the Sewing Crew. It
is true that we need people who can sew on machines, but we
also need people who can cut fabric, help pin alterations,
wash hats, fit shoes, measure, and weigh members, and so
much more.
On Tour, the Sewing Crew requires people to be a bit more
experienced. You must be able to run a machine
(straight stitch and zig-zag at least!)
. You will be
responsible for altering uniforms, repairing flags,
laundering uniforms, ironing uniforms, and generally keeping
the corps looking good. You don’t need to be an expert in
any area. You can be taught these sewing activities
(blind hems!)
.
If you are interested in touring with the corps on the
Sewing Crew, it is highly recommended that you attend a Winter
Camp
or a weekend during Everydays to learn the required skills.
What
to bring to Winter Camps
The general rule is to bring your preferred supplies. If you never use a thimble, don’t worry about
bringing one. If
you like a certain kind of thread cutting scissor, bring
them!
-
Scissors
for cutting fabric (also a pair of thread scissors if
you prefer a smaller pair for cutting threads)
-
Seam
Ripper (or two!)
-
Hand
needles (whatever type you prefer)
-
Thimble
What to bring on
Tour
Apart from the general “What to pack” list
(found on some other general volunteer page)
, the sewing crew is not required to bring anything special. Just like Winter Camps if you are partial to a
certain kind of tool, feel free to bring that along. The best thing to bring is your sense of humor!
