OVERVIEW
The
caravan of corps vehicles travels nearly every night, with
two-day layovers every week or so. The first two weeks of 2008
competitions are held at locations in the local region. During
this period, the corps will return each night to Baraboo, WI.
During the remainder of the 2008 tour, the typical evening
travel is 4-8 hours each night. The caravan stops at truck
stops every 2-4 hours. The corps usually arrives at the
housing facility around 5-8 a.m.
Upon
arrival at the school, drivers oversee unloading of the buses,
and park and lock them. The equipment truck parks near water
and electrical availability. The equipment truck is parked
near the practice field. The souvenir trailer should be parked
for maximum protection from the hot sun and the volunteer van
is parked in the same manner, but must have electrical access
to run the air conditioner. The Corps Director (Dann Petersen)
will provide direction to a dark quiet room for sleep.
Once
awake, drivers do a vehicle check, make any necessary DOT
notations, ensure that necessary upkeep or repairs are
scheduled and completed, and fuel vehicles for the evening.
Departure
time from the housing site will be announced via the
Communications dry erase board early in the day. Complete
mileage tracking and other DOT bookkeeping requirements are an
absolute must- Department of Transportation fines can cause a
drum corps to fold. After dinner, drivers have buses running
and cooled down 15 minutes before departure time. The caravan
departs for the stadium, and after the show onto the next
town.
